part 2

When sitting at the table, Sir Corrado realises quicky that the crane has one thigh missing.

 That startles him. He then summons Chichibio and ask him what happened with the other thigh. Chichibio respond immediately “ but Sir Corrado, the crane only have one thigh because they only have one leg..” Sir Corrado then responds: “all right then,let’s see tomorrow, and if it is not like you said, you will receive so many blows that you will never forget!” the next morning after dawn, Sir Corrado, still very upset saddle the horses and called Chichibio. Together , they go near a river where they usually can find cranes. Sir Corrado says: “ now let’s see which one of us lied last night”

Boccaccio writes the Decamerone in the Italian language from circa three hundred called “vulgar”. What will follow is a summary, in contemporary italian, from a novel suitable for advanced students.

A long time ago, in Florence, lived a noble called Sir Corrado Gianfigliazzi, a rich banker famous for being generous and very good at hunting with a falcon.

One day, when he was hunting in the country near Florence, his falcon got a young and fat crane to the joy of Sir Corrado. He gave it to his excellent venetian cook called Chichibio and ordered him to cook it and serve it for dinner.
Chichibio,usually very clever in cooking, prepared the crane with great care so that when the cooking is almost done, the whole kitchen is filled with a delicious aroma that Brunetta, the girl that Chichibio fell in love with, can’t resist.
Brunetta, entered the kitchen and when she sees the crane, asked Chichibio if she can eat a thigh, but Chichibio told her:” I am sorry, but i can”t give it to you! It is for the master and his guest”. Brunetta praised him for a long time but then threatened him:”if you don’t give it to me,i promised i will not look at you anymore”. Finally Chichibio surrenders, cuts one of the thigh of the roasted crane and gives it to her, then he serves the crane to Sir Corrado and his friend guest.

Messer: o messere form used in italian language circa four hundred means “Master” a title used for polite form
falcone: a type of hawk, rather big, used in the old times for hunting.

When Brunetta speaks with Chichibio she uses the formal form “il voi’ instead of ‘il lei’. It was, in fact, in the past, the most used form for courtesy and respect, while today we use only “ il Lei”. But “il Voi” is still used in many parts of southern Italy.

キキビオは馬上で恐怖に震えていました。出来ることなら逃げ出したかったのですが、そんなことは出来ません。川に着いた時、まず彼らが目にしたのは片足で立ったまま眠っている12羽の鶴でした。すぐさまキキビオは言いました。”ご主人様、昨日のご覧になったままの鶴でございます! 私が言った事が真実でございました。 鶴は一本足でございます。ご覧になってください!!” コッラド氏は答えました。”待ちなさい。今、おまえに鶴が二本足であることを見せてあげよう! “ そして鶴に近づいてこう叫びました。”オー! オー!”　この叫び声で、哀れな鶴たちはもう一本の足を下ろし逃げ出しました。コッラド氏はキキビオの方に振り返り、こう迫ったのです。”さあ、どうだ? この悪党め! これでも鶴は一本足だと言いはるのかね?”　キキビオは初め言葉をなくしましたが、やがてダメもとでこう答えました。”ご主人様の言う通りでございます。ですが、昨夜ご主人様は鶴に”オー オー “と叫びませんでした。もしなさっていたならば、昨日の鶴も間違いなくもう一本の足を下ろしたことでしょう。そうしたらもう片方の腿も現れたはずです! ” この言葉を聞きながらコッラド氏はおもわず笑い出してしまいました。料理人として優秀なだけでなく、機知に富んだ会話の出来るキキビオを罰する気が失せてしまったのです。こうしてキキビオは主人からなんの咎めもなく許されたのでした。

食卓でコッラド氏は、鶴の腿が一本足りないことにすぐ気づきました。その事に唖然とした彼は、キキビオを呼びつけ鶴のもう一本の腿はどうしたのだとたずねました。キキビオは当然のことのように答えました。”ご主人様、鶴には腿は一本しかございません。なぜなら足が一本しかないのですから… ” するとコッラド氏はこう答えました。”何を言うんだ！まさか私が初めて鶴を見たとでも言うつもりかい？” そして益々怒った様子でこう続けました。”よろしい、それでは明日の朝、鶴を見に行こうじゃないか。もし、おまえの言う通りでなかったら、一生忘れられないくらいおまえを叩いてやるぞ。” 　次の日の夜明け、まだ怒りが収まらないコッラド氏はさっそく馬に鞍を置き、キキビオを呼びました。二人はいつも鶴が生息している川の近くまで行きました。そしてコッラド氏は言いました。”さあ、二人の内どちらが昨夜嘘をついたか見てみようじゃないか。”　



Le botte: 殴打(=ビンタ、足蹴、打擲など) ; la botte-le botti (=ワイン保存用の樽) と混同しないこと。
sellare: 馬に鞍を置く。
